Waste management and recycling

Waste MANAGEMENT

Supporting our commercial and industrial client in their journey towards zero-waste to landfill

Veolia Middle East offers to its customers an integrated waste management system to help them optimize their production flow, reduce transportation and treatment costs and lower their impact on the environment. Veolia is one of the major players in the materials recycling management and circular economy specialist.

We build entire value chains to recycle all types of waste, from specific collection solutions to recycled material trading.

Over 3,000 tonnes
of recyclables collected annually

Household waste, non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste, construction waste, organic waste, hazardous industrial and commercial waste: the diversity of waste categories makes their collection a logistical challenge.

Veolia is the waste recovery and management specialist. It follows the entire life-cycle of the waste, right from collection to recycling. The first step is taking charge of the waste to then be relayed to the logistics department. Veolia develops innovative solutions and establishes numerous partnerships in order to offer its clients genuine expertise in collection system. Environment-friendly solutions that promote recycling.

In the Abu Dhabi's region, since 1997 Veolia Environmental Services Emirates delivers total waste management with 370 dedicated waste management employees.

  • Over 75,000 tonnes of commercial waste hauled annually
  • Over 3,000 tonnes of recyclables collected annually
  • Over 1,500,000 tonnes of hazardous waste hauled annually

Veolia’s global and long-standing expertise in resource recovery allows for the implementation of best-practice technologies for sustainable waste management.

For governments, local councils and businesses alike, managing waste is more important than ever. From plastics, paper, metals and cardboard – often regarded as rubbish – to wasted resources such as water and energy, the focus is now on turning them into something useful. This is what Veolia does best.

Our solutions meet evolving community needs, reducing environmental impacts through efficiency, research and innovation. We contribute to and engage with the communities where we operate and live.

Engineered landfills

There will always be a need to dispose of residual waste and the disposal of this material must be handled with maximum care and attention. Veolia runs a comprehensive network of engineered landfill sites and recovery facilities. Veolia can provide an effective and safe solution for our clients' disposal requirements. Each Veolia landfill is managed to the highest environmental standards, with strict adherence to the relevant legislation and Environment Agency guidelines, enabling us to fulfill our customer’s own quality and environmental requirements.

In Oman, since 2017, we operate safely landfills of Ibri and Al Buraimi, receiving 350T/Day of municipal waste, while producing environment impact.

  • Ibri landfill capacity: 600.000 m3
  • Al Buraimi landfill capacity: 500.000 m3

Today, only 9% of plastics are recycled.  At the same time, the consequences on the environment, human health and biodiversity are significant.

The production and consumption of food generate a lot of waste besides food-waste: packaging.  In Abu Dhabi and Dubai, more than 900,000 metric tonnes of plastic resin are used annually — 45 per cent in consumer packaging and 5 per cent in consumer goods. This is a colossal issue because most plastics don’t just ‘go away’, they end in our seas and oceans, taking hundreds of years to degrade.

It is therefore necessary to act and propose solutions. Veolia recycles 600,000 tonnes of plastic waste worldwide per year.

Veolia  ambition is to structure an industrial recycling and plastic recovery sector and so offer an alternative to virgin materials, Antoine Frérot, Veolia CEO

Veolia's plastic recycling offer can be broken down into several stages:

  • Collection and transport of plastics to the treatment centre. We focus on 3 resins: PET, PP, HDPE.
  • Pre-sorting to separate plastics, paper, cardboard, metals, etc., and then sorting the plastics themselves
  • Hot water washing to remove impurities
  • Crushing to reduce plastics to particles (flakes, pellets, compounds).
  • The formulation to achieve the product quality and the specific technical characteristics expected by the customer
  • Extrusion to regenerate the material

Veolia is a world leader in hazardous waste treatment, recycling, and recovery and soil remediation thanks to its specialized subsidiaries.

According to their origin and composition, hazardous waste can be incinerated or physicochemically treated in dedicated facilities or stabilized and buried in special landfills.
